La seua carrera escaquista es desenvolupa ascendentment fins que li arriba el seu declivi al 1866 en perdre un encontre contra Wilhelm Steinitz per ]6-8. Va ser testimoni de molts canvis en els escacs com ara el temps de reflexio, en aquell temps es feien servir moltes hores per una sola jugada.
