Frequentou a Ecole Normale Superieure, uma das mais prestigiadas instituicoes francesas de ensino anteriores a II Guerra, onde e colega de Sartre, Marrou, Friedman, Canguilhem e Nizan - em nenhum outro sitio, dizia, encontrou tanta gente inteligente "em tao poucos metros quadrados" . Aluno brilhante, obtem a aggregation, mas passa por uma "crise interior" ao terminar os estudos, por ter perdido anos a nao aprender "quase nada" . Vai entao para a Alemanha, onde vive entre 1930 e 1933, como leitor em Colonia, primeiro, e depois como bolseiro em Berlim. Regressado a Franca, ensina primeiro no Liceu do Havre e em 1934 torna-se secretario do Centro de Documentacao Social da ENS, dirigido por C. Bougle, passando a leccionar na Escola Normal de Saint Claude. Entre 1935 e 1938 faz como um "bon garcon," casa-se e ve nascer a primeira filha, Dominique.
