Galilei werd op 15 februari 1564 geboren te Pisa als oudste zoon van Vincenzo Galilei en Giulia Ammananti. Zijn vader was een bekend luitspeler-componist en schrijver van muziektheoretische boeken. In 1574 zou Vincenzo samen met zijn vrouw en vijf jongste kinderen naar Florence trekken, terwijl de tienjarige Galileo achterbleef in Pisa bij schoonfamilie van zijn moeder, Muzio Tedaldi, een koopman met wie Galileo's vader korte tijd een handel in wol had gehouden.
