Nas palavras do historiador militar Basil Liddell Hart, Sherman foi "o primeiro general moderno" e "o genio mais original da Guerra Civil Americana." Recebeu essa qualificacao por ter sido um dos primeiros lideres militares a utilizar conscientemente a destruicao da base economica e da moral da populacao civil do oponente como meio principal de vencer o conflito, dentro dos principios da guerra total. Tecumseh Sherman nasceu em Lancaster, Ohio, como sexto filho de Charles Sherman e Mary Hoyt Sherman.
