Le pere de Frida, Carl Wilhelm Kahlo (1871-1941), ne a Pforzheim dans le Bade-Wurtemberg en Allemagne, n'etait pas, comme le voudrait une legende repandue juif d'origine germano-austro-hongroise mais un allemand de confession lutherienne issu de la bourgeoisie badoise, est arrive au Mexique en 1891, a l'age de 19 ans. On l'appellera Guillermo qui est la traduction de Wilhelm en castillan. Il etait le fils du bijoutier et orfevre Jakob Kahlo et de Henriette Kaufmann.
