Description:Excerpt from The Michigan Engineers' Annual: Containing the Proceedings of the Michigan Engineering Society, for 1889 In connection with the idea of more frequent meetings is this; the failure of our State Institutions to benefit the people as they might, not per 86, but because the people at large do not demand a different course. How little is known throughout the State what is being done and what is the daily thought at these institutions! The students know, and so do the Professors in charge. But both probably have too much to do already. We see results when a class is graduated. Then a sweltering crowd listen to music, and the sweet patter of words set to the latest rhetorical rhythm, and they go away to come again the next year, and so on. The grad nates file out from this modern Parthenon, and Michigan people have the pleasure of reading a long list of names in the catalogues. Is it not wrong to give so many advantages to the few, at the expense of the many, when both might be subserved? We have seen that the population of Michigan is over Now instead of limiting our State institutions to the service of the few who are able to attend them directly, a large number of our thoughtful, studious, and isolated people should be kept constantly informed of the current thought of these schools. Is there not some way in which these superheated bodies can send a little daily or weekly warmth to the distant regions of Michigan? Or can not the people be in closer contact with them by means of the press? Take the Surveying and Engineering Departments How much is being worked out that would be useful to every one of this class? Both successes and failures should be spread abroad. You say that this is done by occasional reports and bulletins. And we answer, they are too occasional. Give these schools each a good active reporter, and the means to pay him, or turn some of the usual appropriations to a different purpose, and let us know by minute reports to the daily or weekly papers just what they are talking about. The people are the students, and they are sitting with their feet hanging from the rough back-woods benches, listening for something from these schools. Let these enlarge their bor ders, so that the whole State shall be their campus! The engi neers are interested in this general question with its special application to their needs, and perhaps can use their in uence with the powers that be to bring about these desirable con ditions.
