Description:Excerpt from The Walpole Society, Vol. 5: 1915 1917 Some apology may be expected by the members of such a body as the Walpole Society for the unscientific treatment accorded to a subject, so fresh and so interesting as that Of English seventeenth-century portrait drawings, in confining the discussion to such examples as chance to find themselves in a single collection. The project of issuing these notes in a form lamentably unrelated to the general history of the subject was, however, suggested by the conspicuous success of the exhibition and publication of the portrait oil-paintings belonging to Oxford collections in stimulating new interest in British iconography, and attract ing the attention of historians, art critics, and journalists to this branch of study. The ancient origin, extent, variety, and permanent public character Of these collections place them in a position all their own, and may be held to excuse an attempt to deal with the whole subject upon the basis of such illustra tions of it as they afford, especially at a moment when the conditions of life leave few students free to work at such tri ing occupations and confine officials closely to the collections under their own care.
