Description:Excerpt from A Pronouncing German Reader: To Which Is Added a Method of Learning to Read and Understand the German Language, With or Without a Teacher To teach the sounds of a language by written words is, no doubt, a difficult, perhaps an impossible under taking; nor do I intend to say that those who teach themselves by this means, can obtain as good a pro nunciation as those who learn from a teacher, who has paid attention to this subject. But the German language is spoken. Over so extensive a territory, and the pro nunciation, even of men of education, is so very dis similar, that I atter myself that the opinion of one who has paid great attention to the sounds of different languages, may not be unwelcome to any student. But my principal object, in occupying so large a space of this volume by the pronunciation, was to enable per sons who cannot employ a teacher, to obtain a pronun ciation which will be at least perfectly intelligible. I am convinced that many more persons who live in the smaller towns of America, where German teachers can not always be obtained, would study German for the sake of our literature, if they could only obtain the pro nunciation.
