"In the ordinary working of this main, there will be little pressure upon this portion of the pipe; but by the closing of the valves at Denton, or at Broomstair bridge, it would be subject to a dead pressure, when the water is at rest, of about 150 feet in the centre of the town. "After the water was once delivered into the Gorton reservoirs, and the deep valley of the river Tame passed in safety, it was not considered desirable to submit the pipe to its utmost test until the reservoirs were full, that there might be no scarcity of water should an accident occur. As soon, however, as the reservoirs were full, the portion of the pipe between Broomstair bridge and Godley was subjected to the whole dead pressure of the water. On the 18th the water was thus on for several hours, without the occurrence of any accident. On the 14th the pipes were again tried, the water again remaining on for a considerable period without accident; when, after the pipes had been thoroughly examined, and every imperfect place supposed to have been discovered, and just as the water was turned on at Gorton, a burst occurred near the centre of the town of Hyde, about 400 or 500 yards below the self-acting closing valve. A piece six feet in length was blown out of the side of a pipe which at the time would probably be bearing about 180 feet of pressure. The volume of water discharged through such a fracture was of course at first immense; but the increased current acted back immediately upon the safety valve, which speedily closed, stopping at once the further flow, and cutting off the pressure of 100 feet of water. Nothing remained but the water in the pipe, between ...We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
