Spherical Waves and Shocks (Classic Reprint)

Gerald B Whitham
4.9/5 (10891 ratings)
Description:Excerpt from Spherical Waves and Shocks The propagation of weak spherical waves and shocks will be described following the method of Faf. L, in which the shocks occurring in steady supersonic flow past an axisymmetrical body were determined. The direct analogy to the latter problem is the propagation of cylindrical shocks; but the case of spherical symmetry is similar. The starting point of this method is the linearized theory, which in this case is the simple acoustic theory. The linear results, although extremely valuable for certain purposes, become inadequate to describe the propagation after some time since they do not give the correct spreading out of the wave; the linearized theory does not allow for the varia tion in the 1333; sound speed or for the connection of sound with the fluid, and as time goes on these small variations ao cumulate. Moreover, shocks, which play an important part in the flow, cannot be included in such a theory. However, these defects can be corrected to give a valid description of the non-linear propagation; this is the basis of the present theory.
