Description:Over the past few months of running the +50 project, we have been asked by several people about the name. Why +50? Why not +65? Why +? Does it have anything to do with SG50? Simply put, we – the ambitious folks at PLATFORM – want to add 50 more Singapore-based photographers to daily conversation, so that we don’t have to talk about just a few known names. (And yes, we were trying to be better than SG50. Can you blame us for trying?) Speaking of numbers, a US-based research company released a report this year that places the number of photographers globally in the billions. It also projected steady growth over the years to come. So it’s official: everyone is a photographer these days. On the other hand, in the recently concluded World Press Photo competition, out of more than 80,000 entries submitted by close to 6,000 participants, fewer than 50 photographers were deemed worthy of a prize. So not everyone is a photographer after all. In the big scheme of things, what is the significance of our little effort to bring attention to 50 more like-minded colleagues? We think we will be making more than just a dent. Because it is good to have choices? Because we can? Because nobody else is doing it? Because a selection of images curated by our peers in the community is a better way of exacting a high standard? Perhaps we can feel a little better knowing that despite all the competition and envy, most photographers are just groupies who love to do things together. We love to see what others are doing and we look to each other for inspiration. We believe that each individual voice and point of view is unique and worthy of more than a ‘like’ on Facebook. We subscribe to the common belief that in Singapore, things change rapidly, what is here today may not be here tomorrow and photography is a great way of immortalising a moment. We want the world to know that while some people prefer to complain incessantly about the lack of exposure for Singapore-based photographers, we prefer to let our good work do the talking. We daydream that someday, decades down the road, someone doing research on photography on this little red dot will find more than 50 reasons to say that once upon a time, there existed a group of idealistic photographers, each with a story to tell.
