Toward the end of the year 1860, Adelina Patti, the songstress, then already celebrated throughout America, came to Europe. Her first public appearance took place on the 10th of May, 1860, at Covent Garden Theater, in London, under the direction of Mr. Frederick Gye. As a sort of prejudice against certain American celebrities had for some time existed in Europe, no very friendly reception had been prepared for Patti, who was then scarcely seventeen years of age. The ordinarily so amiable London public was cold as ice when the gentle elf presented herself for the first time in the role of Amina, in "Sonnambula." Adelina Patti felt herself wounded by this frosty reception, but determined to show to the cold Britons what she was, and what she could do. Scarcely had she sung DEGREES the first notes in the opening recitative when the whole house broke out in loud applause. The greatest admirer of the singer was George Ronconi, who was present at the performance, in one of the boxes. He called out, with enthusiasm: "Questa bambina fara una grandissima camera" (This child has a great career before her). "Adresso abbiamo trovato la nostra prima-donna" (Now we have found our prima-donna). From this day on, Adelina's fame was firmly established in England. She always sang thereafter to overflowing houses, and was called thenceforth "our little Patti." After the London season, the little prima-donna sang in Holland, Belgium, and Berlin, and had everywhere the greatest success. In Paris also they had at last heard of the triumphs of Patti, although somewhat skeptical about them.
