On June 3rd 1940 the British expeditionary force was evacuated from France, it’s safe to say that the allied troops had gotten away by chance, they ran for the beaches under constant attack as Adolph Hitler’s guns were beating on their backs. Three hundred and thirty-eight thousand allied soldiers escaped from certain defeat, this was only made possible by the rear-guard that stood and fought against the heat. Those soldiers who stayed to toil and work valiantly risking their lives in the bloody battle of Dunkirk The royal air force wasn’t visibly above the battle, this seemed demoralising to the army who waited in their hundreds, packed together like cattle. This caused them much frustration but little did they know their spitfires and hurricanes were fighting farther away than their eyes would show; the answer is simple to their questions and mystery, their fly-boys were far away providing air cover for the largest evacuation in human history. The defenders planes were outnumbered three to one as their RAF squadrons took on the full force of the mighty German Hun. In the distance the ground battles are raging, enemy brigades smash their way through fierce and engaging. Allied infantry units uphold their lines against the invasion that's pushing through field’s hedges and vines. Over the next coming weeks the British armed forces would have to be at their best as they and their commonwealth allies were going to be put through their greatest ever test. The axis war machine was one of the most powerful and most invincible enemies the free world had ever faced. One would say Hitler and his allies were strategically well placed.
