In the 1840s, Kent were the dominant side, to be succeeded by Surrey in the following decade. Surrey's supremacy gave way to Nottinghamshire who, but for the brief intrusion of Grace’s Gloucestershire, reigned for 20 years. When the championship became official, Surrey were again the leading side in the country until giving way to Lord Hawke’s Yorkshire at the turn of the century. Yorkshire dominated cricket for much of the time until the outbreak of World War Two, although there were periods of glory for Kent, Middlesex and especially Lancashire.The 1950s saw the total command of Surridge’s Surrey and this was followed by another period of Yorkshire supremacy.
