Description:Since 2001, Afghanistan has been the focus of world attention as it was considered a viable safe haven for terrorist threats with regional and international implications. Yet even after the withdrawal of international troops and the successful transition of a democratically elected leader in 2014, the question of Afghanistan's future remains the topic of substantial debate. This debate has focused almost exclusively on short-term security issues, mainly counterterrorism, neglecting the three basic factors that will ultimately determine whether or not Afghanistan becomes a safe haven for global terrorism once again: 1) the effectiveness of the Afghan state in delivering acceptable governance to its people; 2) the capacity of the Afghan economy to raise the standard of living for its people; and 3) Afghanistan s changing geopolitical role in the region. This text addresses these issues by critically examining what has happened within Afghanistan over the past dozen years and then offering an analysis of the international and domestic changes that could be implemented over the next decade to bring more stability to that country. The first part of the book examines the contribution of the US-led international military intervention in creating a type of democratic political system in Afghanistan. Part two looks at the capacity of the Afghan economy to raise the standard of living for its people. It highlights the negative impact of aid-dependency and explores such initiatives as the Washington-backed New Silk Road Initiative. Part three then looks at Afghanistan s geopolitical role in the region. It turns to the future and discusses both strategic opportunities and pitfalls it is likely to encounter during its so-called Decade of Transition (2015-2025). Part four concludes by examining threats to Afghanistan s stability, such as ongoing insurgency and corruption. Overall, the text investigates the correlation between political and economic reforms. Key regional economic actors are studied within the context of regional transformation from the Cold War to the emergence of Afghanistan as a regional economic hub promising cooperation and economic integration. However, the ongoing insurgency and corruption challenge such development and could create a political crisis. To overcome such threats, economic stability needs to be linked to improved governance, supported at the local level by legal frameworks backed by the private sector, international investors, and the economic market. This establishes the basis for picturing a stable Afghanistan, which is critical for US national security interests in this part of the world and full of potential for a new regional order."We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
