I have prepared these Volumes, hoping to render some service to the present and coming generations. I find the following in a biographical sketch which is so exactly to my point that I-quote it. "The living may be benefitted by the dead. A knowledge of the histories of those whom God has raised up to serve him on earth, perpetuates their influence. It brings instruction and furnishes material for improvement. To review their lives is like looking into a glass. It shows us, in varying circumstances, the workings of minds and hearts like our own. It unfolds, also, the dealings of God with those who have gone before us, - how he has instructed, disciplined and guided them; and tends to strengthen faith, encourage hope and excite to activity by presenting various instances of God's kindness, faithfulness and care."
