The object of the writer was to give such hints and suggestions from his own experience in campaigning and camping out, as would contribute to the stock of information of those immediately under the command of friends who have bad but little time to devote to the acquisition of military knowledge and few opportunities for practice on the subjects of which it treats. In so doing, he has endeavored to furnish the inexperienced volunteer, officer as well as private, with a concise, yet comprehensive hand-book on every matter of interest connected with the employment of troops, in camp or on the field of action, whether in offensive or defensive operations: and such hints and suggestions that might not readily occur to them for alleviating much of the hardships and risks incidental to the profession of arms.
