Description:Excerpt from The Fourth Book of Reading Lessons The present work is intended as a connecting link between the preparatory books and the higher or scientific volumes of the series. The scholar having been enabled, by means of his earlier exercises, to read with ease and intelligence, is here presented with a collection of interesting extracts, chiefly of a narrative character, and such as the youthful mind will seize upon with avidity. At the same time, they embody facts and phenomena of a most instructive character, relating to the sciences afterwards to be introduced to the pupil's notice, in such a manner, however, as to make their perusal and retention in the memory a matter of pleasure rather than of study. The arrangement adopted in this volume is geographical. The extracts comprise incidents in History, Biography, Travel, Discovery, and Adventure, with sketches of Manners and Customs, Natural History, &c., relating to the most important countries in the world. But, while it has been sought to enlarge the mind of the scholar, by introducing him to other lands and ages, particular attention has been paid to the British American provinces, by devoting to them, and to the empire of which they form so important a part, the largest share in the book.
