The numerous indications of the weakness and ill-health of Disraeli had prepared his lieutenant for the probability of his retirement from the House of Commons, and even for the possibility of his relinquishing political life altogether. Only his dauntless spirit and strong sense of duty had kept him in harness so long; he yielded, as will be seen, to the urgent pressure of his Royal Mistress and his devoted followers, so far as to consent to continue his tenure of the Premiership, but was compelled to abandon the heavy labour and late hours necessitated by the duties of the House of Commons. It would be idle to deny that my father had for some time looked forward, with mixed feelings, to the prospect of succeeding to the lead of the House of Commons in the event of his Chief's retirement. He had repeatedly taken his place as deputy on the occasions of his temporary absence. Disraeli had described him as his 'right hand.' It would not become me to discuss the merits of the choice ultimately made, or its effect upon the fortunes of the party.
