Description:Excerpt from Revised Regulations for the Government of the United States Marine-Hospital Service: Approved May 20, 1885 1. The corps of the United States Marine-Hospital Service shall consist of the Supervising Surgeon-General, surgeons, passed assistant surgeons, and assistant surgeons officers and employes. Supervising Surgeon-General. 2. The Supervising Surgeon-General is charged by law with the supervision, under the direction of the Secretary of the Treasury, of all matters connected with Marine-Hospital Service and with the disbursement of the marine-hospital fund. The medical officers and acting assistant surgeons will receive their orders from the Supervising Surgeon-General. 3. The Supervising Surgeon-General will prepare and revise, subject to the approval of the Secretary of the Treasury, all regulations and instructions for the government of the officers and employes of the Marine-Hospital Service. 4. The Supervising Surgeon-General will exercise constant vigilance over officers and employes of the Service and will cause prompt and impartial investigation to be made of any reported dereliction of duty. 5. The Supervising Surgeon-General will cause the property returns of medical officers and acting assistant surgeons of the Marine-Hospital Service to be examined, and take care that all public property is duly accounted for. Medical Corps. 6. Medical officers of the Marine-Hospital Service will be appointed by the Secretary of the Treasury, upon the recommendation of the Supervising Surgeon-General, after an examination as to their qualifications as hereinafter provided. 7. Original appointments of medical officers in the United States Marine-Hospital Service will be made to the grade of assistant surgeon only.
