Any reader of this book who knows little about the Union, but who wishes to know more, will find a certain amount of information in the Introductory Address, and in a few others of the Sermons themselves. Here it may be sufficient to say that the Union was founded in order to keep within, or bring back to Judaism, some at any rate of the large number of persons (in all classes of society) who are now drifting away from it. A few of these are finding a certain amount of religious satisfaction in other forms of Theistic faith; the majority seem to be losing their hold upon religion altogether.
