Description:Originally published in 1922, now in the public domain, this kindle edition is the complete two-volume work, fully edited with linked footnotes and 16 illustrations. Monsignor Peter K. Guilday (1884-1947), once described as the Catholic intelectual in the post-modernist church, was a U.S. Catholic priest and historian, born in Chester, Pennsylvania of Irish parents. He studied for the priesthood at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, Overbrook PA. He gained his PhD from Louvain University with a dissertation on “The English Colleges and Convents in the Catholic Low Countries, 1558–1795.” His writings established him as the period's leading scholar in Catholic Church history. In 1924 Guilday was elected a fellow of the Royal Historical Society, in 1935 he was made a domestic prelate of his church by Pope Pius XI. It has been said that the literature of American Catholicism is perhaps strongest in biography. Guilday's biography of Archbishop Carroll, the first Catholic bishop in the U.S., has been considered one of the best biographies of a prominent ecclesiastic. Having taught at Catholic University of America (from 1914), and regarded as the father of modern Catholic historiography in the U.S., Guilday was most important in fostering the study of the American Catholic Church by his founding the “Catholic Historical Review” in 1915. For the first six years of the journal, he made certain that only research on the American Catholic Church was published. In 1919, he also helped in setting up the “American Catholic Historical Association,” which is today the largest Catholic scholarly organization in the U.S. devoted to the study of the worldwide Catholic Church. In his writings, whether on individuals such as John Carroll, he tried to combat America's fear of Catholicism, a fear that he believed was based on ignorance and resulted in Catholics' being discriminated against. Guilday emphasized the patriotism of American Catholics throughout American history as well as how much the principles on which America was founded coincided with the Catholic faith. His work tried to vindicate Catholic activities in a country where nativist antagonists had unfairly discounted Catholic contributions to liberty. As he himself emphasized: “To understand the Catholic Church in America one must see how naturally and integrally the spiritual allegiance of its members knit into the national allegiance so as to round each other out.” To him, there was no essential incompatibility between Catholicism and American political culture. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
