I began this book in 1969, based on 300 letters I'd written my wife during the year I spent in Vietnam, treating patients at the 12th. During the almost fifty years since, I hope I've become a more skillful writer! The story is of a young American physician, impaired from Seconal addiction, who volunteered for Nam, knowing that if he survived, it would be without the addiction. I could not have known what would happen, and it was surprising! I recovered in time to face the unrelenting demands on our hospital by the Tet Offensive of 1968. I've taken pains to let the reader understand my experiences, those of one who went there to get off of drugs, whose actions were to help Americans and a few Vietnamese, and who grew to know, personally, what it was like to go "Rockin' in the Round-Eye Lounge." If you or any of your family served, Welcome Back! My book is meant to honor all of those who served! Although I wasn't in combat, I am proud that the 12th USAF Hospital for the time I served was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation Award for its service during the Tet Offensive of 1968. (This was the same award given to those Navy Seals who killed Bin Laden.) I do tell what Tet was like! As well, I give the blissful experience of finally getting on that Bird to go home! The surprise ending, in and of itself, is worth it for those who, as I do, believe in story and find themselves therein.
