Francis Ellington Leupp
4.9/5 (18771 ratings)
Description:George Westinghouse: His Life And Achievements, by Francis Ellington Leupp (1849-1918). Illustrated From Photographs. Published in Boston in 1919 (304 pages) The Publisher has copy-edited this book to improve the formatting, style and accuracy of the text to make it readable. This did not involve changing the substance of the text. Some books, due to age and other factors may contain imperfections. Since there are many books such as this one that are important and beneficial to literary interests, we have made it digitally available and have brought it back into print for the preservation of printed works of the past. Preface (excerpt) ...Although George Westinghouse was, in the broadest sense, a public servant, my own acquaintance with him was only social. As he left behind him no diaries, no files of personal correspondence, and scarcely any other sources of supply on which the biographer of a political or military celebrity depends for much interesting material, I have been obliged to rely, in the main, on the memories of the friends of Mr. Westinghouse, local tradition and gossip in neighborhoods where he had lived, the records of courts and minutes of public meetings, corporate reports and partnership account books, old volumes of newspapers and magazines, miscellaneous scrapbooks, and the like. One day, let us hope, we may have from the pen of some well-known expert in technology an adequate summary of what the whole world's industrial advancement owes to the work of the eminent inventor. The mission of the present volume is simply human. It will have been accomplished if it conveys to the young man of today a sense that his career will depend for success less on the splendor of its start than on the spirit in which he pursues it; far less on capital than on courage, on worry than on watchfulness, on "pull" than on persistence. Contents: Chapter I "At First, the Infant" — Chapter II "The Age 'Twixt Boy and Youth" — Chapter III Soldier and Sailor, Student and Swain — Chapter IV Opportunity Knocks at the Door — Chapter V Doubt Changed to Certainty — Chapter VI "Nothing Succeeds Like Success" — Chapter VII The Battle of the Brakes — Chapter VIII Opening a Mine of Gaseous Wealth — Chapter IX What the Gas Did for Pittsburgh — Chapter X The Contest of the Currents — Chapter XI The Struggle in New York — Chapter XII Origin of the "Stopper" Lamp — Chapter XIII From Niagara to the Navy — Chapter XIV "Blushing Honors Thick upon Him" — Chapter XV A Second Financial Ordeal — Chapter XVI Air Springs and Addresses — Chapter XVII A Big Man's Human Side — Chapter XVIII "The Old Man" and His Employees — Chapter XIX A Trio of Homes — Chapter XX Insignia of Character — Chapter XXI "Last Scene of All" List of Illustrations: (These illustrations are also available for viewing and download at www.digitaltextpublishing.com) George Westinghouse The Mother and Father of George Westinghouse Birthplace at Central Bridge, N.
