Description:This dystopian novel reveals a world in the near future where climate change rules and homeless people are indentured---not for slave labor, but for the use of their skin. Climate change has ruined forests and thus the paper supply, while nuclear wars have crippled petroleum production--hence plastic and other oil-based products are in short supply. In a not-so-distant future, the value of paper has risen high---and the value of some human lives have fallen so low---that homeless people are willing to trade the use of their skin for food and housing. The so-called Paper People are shaved and covered head to toe with minuscule tattooed reproductions of famous books. Upon death, each skin will be rendered into parchment to preserve the books. But it becomes clear that death for these homeless folks will come sooner than expected, so the Paper People must flee, led by a messianic character, Cristo, with three split personalities. The husband- and- wife team of elderly narrators describe what they did and what they felt and saw. Rich plot points include the racial tensions between warring gangs, and social commentary as the narrators address their grandchildren directly. As the Paper People find themselves fighting for their lives against bizarre villains and gang leaders, the book feels part Batman, part Mad Max and part Hunger Games. The parallel love story between the narrators leads to the Frankenstein-like rebirth of the dead female narrator, and the corresponding death of her husband.
