Description:The development of Masonic ritual can be traced to the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Up to 1730, the emergence of the three degree system became apparent and culminated in the publication of Masonry Dissected by William Pritchard in 1730. For thirty years there had been no real development in Masonic ritual exposures but in 1760 there appeared Three Distinct Knocks purporting to give the ceremonies as used by the Antients. Two years later Jachin and Boaz appeared and in 1765 Shibboleth was published. These three English Masonic exposures met with much success and although they were not the only such publications of the period they are of significant importance in the development of English Masonic Ritual. A. C. F. Cosby Jackson is an expert on these publications and for the first time all three exposures are printed in full so that students of Masonic ritual can see for themselves the formation and changes in Masonic ceremonial. The author gives much detailed information on all three publications and comments on the differences in each.
