Description:The following four short stories are an experiment in a new genre of fiction, which I’m calling a “Literary Suite.” I define a literary suite as four short, self-contained, stories that follow one another and all of them explore a common idea or share a common theme. “Suite” is a French word, which means a sequence of things following one another. In music it is a composition composed of four short musical pieces or movements tied together by a common theme, or a unified key.The theme, or unified key, which links these four short stories, is death. I realize this may seem a bit glum. However, death has always provided a great opportunity to explore other meaningful ideas and experiences, as I will in these stories; namely, ideas of beauty and love, happiness and forgiveness, joy and sorrow, knowledge and meaning, freedom and choice among others. Thinking about death affects how we live our life. Some philosophers have even argued that learning how to die is the only way to learn how to live. I’m persuaded, personally, that appreciating our own death frees us form inauthentic ways of living – though we might have to give up what others think we should do for our own authentic projects. We should never underestimate the sacrifice this may require. Of course, the beauty of story and narrative is they allow us to experience death in life without having to die ourselves. So death can become our teacher while it can still do us some good in living our life with a greater focus on what matters the most. If we could bring to each moment the reverence for life that living with the awareness of death brings, then we would live without regrets every day of our lives and with happiness in each moment. My hope is that you will be invited by these stories to be more attentive to those brief moments each day when you recognize beauty, when you forgive or are forgiven, when you love or are loved, when you find joy or give joy, and when you truly feel sorrow for another living thing and choose to carry it for them. These are the experiences that make our life worthwhile. Every day there are those few brief shining moments where we discover the opportunity to experience beauty, forgiveness, love, joy, and even sorrow. They are available to everyone, at any time, in any circumstance. We only fail to see their presence all around us out of fear, or when we misplace our devotion on trivial things that don’t in the end matter. The more we are able to recognize these moments when they occur, the more we will be able to dwell in happiness in each moment. At the end of each story, there are a few reflection questions for those who may want to deepen their experience and ponder a bit about what they have read. The questions might also stimulate an interesting book club discussion. I have also included with each story a little exercise I call “character exercises.” Some may refer to them as spiritual exercises. Of course, an exercise is an activity requiring effort and carried out to sustain and improve one’s health, fitness, and strength. A character, or spiritual, exercise is an activity carried out to sustain and improve the health, fitness, and strength of one’s character, our spiritual well-being – to enable us to live with happiness in each moment. If you are like me, each day you wrestle with feelings of self-doubt, a sense of your own inadequacy, dissatisfaction, and fear. Character exercise are small, but concrete activities each day that replace self-doubt with self-confidence, inadequacy with emotional resilience, dissatisfaction with joy, and fear with love.
