Description:This is a transcription of Enoch Powell's famous and controversial "Rivers of Blood" speech which he gave to the General Meeting of the West Midlands Area Conservative Political Centre in Birmingham on Saturday, 20 April, 1968. Powell's speech is known as the "Rivers of Blood" speech because of his line "Like the Roman, I seem to see the River Tiber foaming with much blood". In his speech, Powell attacks the government's immigration policy and calls for an immediate reduction in the 50,000 immigrants coming into Britain each year at that time. He predicted that by the year 2000, one in ten of the population would be of immigrant descent. With his references to 'negroes' and 'piccaninnies', Powell's speech caused a political storm.
