4.9/5 (23931 ratings)
Description:Almost daily from 1870 through 1920 American artist Clara Francis Stillman (1855-1925) made diary entries about life at home, foreign travel and her cloistered career as an painter. Her teachers included J. Alden Weir, William Merritt Chase and, most important to her, Abbott Handerson Thayer. The travel diaries were filled with sketches of places and people. Miss Stillman's great-great niece excerpted and transcribed the thousands of pages, with many of the sketches beautifully reproduced in the original size. Forty-one color plates show all the paintings now known to exist, the majority oils on canvas or wood. Another dozen color plates represent illuminated Bible pages with flower paintings. An afterword by the editor is a brief biographical sketch and appreciation.Five hundred copies of this book were printed.
