The Samuel Robert Kaufman Family of Marquette

Michael Sheldon Nyquist
4.9/5 (16062 ratings)
Description:The Kaufman family was talented, rich, famous, and influential. It was prominent and newsworthy over a significant period of time in American history. This began with Samuel Robert Kaufman Sr.’s arrival in America in 1849. Descendants would continue in this prominent and newsworthy vein through two subsequent generations, which are covered in this book.In a single generation, the Kaufmans would go from being a family that was headed by a successful merchant - to a family that was heavily involved in mining, banking, railroads, the automotive industry, and the hotel industry.Upon his arrival in America, Samuel Sr. immediately came into contact with Edward Breitung Sr., beginning the multi-generational connection between these two historic families.Samuel’s eldest child Nathan caught the eye of Edward Breitung Sr.’s wife, Mary, and as a result Nathan soon became a partner of the several Breitung mining interests, despite not having had any background in this field. After Edward’s death, Mary and Nathan were married.Further, two months earlier, Edward’s son Edward Breitung Jr. married Charlotte Kaufman. The now integrated Breitung/Kaufman family continued to succeed. Edward Breitung Jr. had inherited dozens of mining companies and developed more. He branched out into banks, a brewery, and interest in a major hotel. He also owned steamships.Edward Breitung Jr.’s loyalties, and those of his German nephew Max Breitung, were severely put to the test with the outbreak of World War I, despite the fact that Edward’s father had been a Michigan Representative, Michigan Senator, Negaunee City Mayor, and a Representative in the US Congress. At first Edward Jr. sought to profit from the war (and perhaps, at the same time, help Germany). But he may have been involved, as his nephew certainly was, in plots against American munition factories and merchant ships.Beyond Nathan and Charlotte Kaufman, the other Kaufman siblings generally did well. Samuel Jr. benefitted both from his brother’s connection to the Breitungs and from his wedding into the Perly Libby family to become active in banking, some mining, and the hotel business.Daniel Webster Kaufman invested in a railroad start-up. With bills piling up and no income with the railroad under construction, Daniel and his wife were divorced after having one child, and Daniel become bankrupt.Bernard Samuel Kaufman was mainly active in the military, although he also dabbled in several other pursuits. He married and had a bitter divorce, subsequently moving to Canada.Louis Graveraet Kaufman by 1899 was the Vice President of a Marquette bank. His career got a boost when he married into the Otto Young family. He became simultaneously the leader of banks in Marquette and New York, and set to work in the latter case to buy-out and consolidate with other banks, while also being active in many other endeavors. This brings us back to Charlotte, the most socially active of the second generation women. But while Edward was busy in what would seem to be pro-German activities during the war, she was a patron of the arts, and of various war charities. By the time of her husband’s death, Charlotte turned her attention to saving his businesses, but it was too late.Harry Livingston Kaufman, the youngest of the brothers, seems to have been an early favorite of Mary and Edward Jr. Breitung, running, among other endeavors, their ore sales office in Cleveland. However, the Breitungs and Harry parted ways in 1917.We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
