He has come to Whitechapel in 1888, because there are so many poor and sick people living in squalor in London's East End. He runs a free clinic where he cures prostitutes of venereal disease and the poor of their various afflictions. It is a symbiotic relationship that has served him well.Stefan takes the young American, whom he renames "Gao" under his wing, first as an apprentice and then as a lover. Gao has lead a troubled life. The only child of a white woman and a light skinned Black doctor living in Paris, he lost his parents to cholera when he was young and was sent to live with his grandparents in Atlanta. When the truth about his mixed parentage was discovered, he was sent to Canada, where he enrolled in a music academy. On a ship bound for Europe with his classmates, he discovered a terrible crime against a fellow student and avenged it using his Voice. Now, he has to elude those who want to seize his power for their own purposes.1888 is a special year in London. In 1887, the Haymarket Five were martyred in Chicago, setting off Bloody Sunday and months of rioting in London. The political violence has subsided, but the city is about to witness a new kind of violence.
