At 15, Mercy Goodhue travels to America on the Winthrop fleet with her family and settles in Boston. On the verge of womanhood, her romantic notions find a target in Joshua. Once they are settled, her dreams are cut short by the death of her mother in childbirth, and the misguided lust of her father, who rapes her in a drunken stupor. In her strict religious community, there is no one Mercy can confide in, not her beloved Joshua, nor her childhood friend, Jane, whom she corresponds with in England. Courageously, Mercy carries on, but she is consumed by guilt. Attempting to seek redemption first by good works, she focuses on outing the midwife Goody Hammer, whom she believes is a witch. When her plot is thwarted, she becomes a follower of Anne Hutchinson, a self-proclaimed prophetess, who encourages her to follow her ‘inner light.’ Anne’s well-intentioned ministry has the opposite effect upon Mercy, who develops an unhealthy obsession with ‘her mistress’, begins to hear voices, and in an effort to settle the question of her salvation, attempts to drown her own child.
