Mellow Sierra City ("Please slow down: Dogs and Children play in the street") is contrasted with the rough-hewn Sierra Buttes raging above it. Here our long-suffering protagonist is attacked by a wild critter and ponders the outcome of a fight to the death with a Mountain Lion. The weather is fittingly gloomy at Donner Pass, where the author is (perhaps) stalked by a Gray Wolf. Trying to find Echo Lake (a little west of Lake Tahoe), Shannon gets lost again, and shifts the blame for his Mr. Magoo-esque orienteering skills to others, without even giving them an opportunity to defend themselves. Finally finding companionship on his last day in the wilderness, the author and his father hike from Carson Pass to Showers Lake , enjoying perfect weather and surpassing Alpine beauty.
