It won honorable mention in the 1991 Writers Digest Short Story Competition, placing 25th out of more than 2000 thousand entries.Desolation Peaks won a 2005 James Nash Memorial Contest award from the St. Louis Writers Guild. Comment from contest judge: “Clearly Hemingway is lurking near, but you integrate his influence skillfully into the theme. Crazy Cathy sees allusions everywhere and damned if Nick doesn't find himself doing it, too. This is a nice touch and very neatly leads to the resolution. The irony of its coming, the very source of the conflict is a masterful touch.”In The Deaf Woman’s TV, the main character awkwardly attempts to date his apartment complex neighbor while showing empathy and concern for an elderly woman. Published in 2007, Issue 4 of “Libbon, UK’s Newest Short Story Magazine.”Hazards of Bat Guano is a humorous story about fly-fishing, bats, caves, and a clear Missouri Ozark stream. It was published in the 2003 Premier Issue of “The Written Word, The Midwest Literary Community Magazine.” One reader wrote, “I loved your story. It made me laugh out loud! Humor is wonderful, and very few can deliver it. It reminded me of Bill Bryson’s hilarious stories.”Sunfish was published in a 1976 issue of “Image,” then loosely affiliated with the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The idealistic poets and writers who published Image have long since disappeared into reality. I’ve included this story because it seems to fit thematically with the others. Also because of its use of the second person pronoun. It’s about you and fish. Likely the most experimental of this collection.Cynthia's Currents looks at decades flown by and Cynthia who refused to go along.
