Description:The novel is based on a medieval genre of Arabic literature called the maqamat, and specifically the Maqamat of Badi' al-Zaman al-Hamadhani. It is a literary form that uses rhymed prose, as well as the constant interjection of Quranic allusions, poetic verses, and idioms taken from the ancient Middle East. It is composed of a series of unrelated episodes in which a wandering narrator is tricked by a mysterious charlatan named Abul-Fath al-Iskanderi (Arabic for Alexander).In this maqamat, the narrator has recently returned from a long period of living abroad (in Turkish it is known as a Gurbet) and is adjusting to life in New York City. As he tries to reintegrate, he meets his own set of Alexanders, both as actual people and in various failed attempts to join in and be part of the life of the city. As a maqamat, the novel makes abundant use of allusions,quotes and wordplay taken from Middle Eastern literature and languages, which are explained throughout the book using footnotes. The plot itself is an allusion, albeit in reverse, to the common theme of a protagonist's return from West to East after time spent abroad in pursuit of an education, and the challenge of mediating their new modern identity with the homeland to which they've returned.
