Description:This book contains a selection from the marasi (elegiac epics) of Mir Anis, hailed as the greatest exponent of this form, as well as one of the greatest poets of the Urdu language. The theme is the Tragedy of Karbala 680 A.D. and Mir Anis has presented his elegies in long narrative poems with descriptions of the ground, single combats, and general engagement, the death of the protagonist followed by lamentation. The marasi are also noted for being pure in their diction and exemplary in their idiom. All British historians of Urdu literature are united in according him a very high stature in Urdu Literature.About the Author / EditorMir Babar Ali Anis was born at Fayzabad in 1803 and died at Lucknow in 1874. He was the grandson of the legendary Masnavi poet Mir Hasan. Anis belonged to the third generation of marsiya poets. During his lifetime, he had a rival in Mirza Dabir, but the subsequent generations have hailed Anis being greater. He was abstemious and religious by upbringing and very formal in his behavior. He gave his assembly the aspect of a court, yet his poetry is replete with sensibility. Apart from literary triumphs he led an almost uneventful life. Compiler: Dr Muhammad Reza Kazimi writes history in English and literary criticism in Urdu. He has taught at St. Patrick’s College and the University of Karachi. He is a former Editorial Consultant of the Oxford University Press. His latest volume of literary criticism has been published by the University of Karachi.
