Apres la Seconde Guerre mondiale (vers la fin de laquelle il sert comme volontaire dans l'United States Army), il est amene a travailler des 1919, dans un premier temps comme copiste et arrangeur, pour Broadway; il y debute comme compositeur en 1922 puis, des l'annee suivante, comme orchestrateur, activite qui sera sa principale (avec celle d'arrangeur), durant sa longue carriere a Broadway qui s'acheve en 1975, s'agissant des creations.
