Description:Ross Duncan is in New York City in 1934, shortly after the end of prohibition and during the time of the Public Enemy.As a favor for the Chicago Outfit, he accepts an invitation to visit the 90-year old millionaire and former Civil War hero, Colonel Bennett, now confined to a wheel chair, at his Long Island mansion. The Colonel is worried about his last surviving granddaughter and only apparent heir, Veronica. It seems she has taken up with a low-level gangster and nightclub owner, Remo Marsden. The Colonel, who tells Duncan he is being blackmailed, offers Duncan a small fortune to rescue his granddaughter and put her back on the right path in life. He asks Duncan to put him out of the misery of his old age which he refuses. As he leaves, Duncan hears a gunshot and realizes the Colonel has probably been shot.Duncan heads to the Knick-Knack Club to find Marsden and begins his search for the girl. One of Marsden’s gunmen, Beef Parker, a thug from Duncan’s past, interrupts a conversation whereby Marsden denies any involvement in blackmail and Duncan is tossed out of the Club.Once again, Duncan finds there is a contract on his life and he has to kill to protect himself. He meets a string of prostitutes, bookers, and madams, including the beautiful, cheerful, but ultimately sorrowful Nancy Presser.Albert Anastasia and Dutch Schultz are two competing mobsters trying to expand their territory with a potential mob war brewing over the Harlem policy (or “numbers”) racket. Beef Parker and three other thugs pick up Duncan on the street just as he is close to Veronica. Taken “for a ride” he manages to escape and exact a brutal vengeance on his would be killers.The hotheaded Marsden goes after Veronica with Duncan hot on his heels. There is a gunfight in which Marsden and Veronica’s kidnappers are killed and Duncan is grievously wounded.
