Description:Sara Jane Lippincott (1823-1904) was an American author, better known by the pseudonym Grace Greenwood. She was born at Pompey, N. Y.. Her family moved to New Brighton, Pennsylvania, where her father was a physician, and she there attended the Greenwood Institute, a ladies' academy, from which she may have taken her pseudonym. In 1853, she married Leander K. Lippincott, but he left the country in 1876 after indictment for land fraud. Her earliest writing was poetry and children's stories, and with her husband she started the Little Pilgrim (1854), an American children's magazine. She was soon producing magazine articles and essays, and became one of the earliest regular female newspaper correspondents. In 1852 she went to Europe on assignment for the New York Times. She was an active supporter of women's rights and of the anti-slavery movement, and during the Civil War wrote articles from Washington DC in aid of the Northern cause.
