He tells of the inevitable conflict between his political ideals and the jeopardy in which he was forced to place his family, and, finally, of his flight into exile.Ronald Segal was born in 1932 and graduated from the University of Cape Town in 1951. From there he went to Trinity College, Cambridge. He won a Fellowship to study for his doctorate at the University of Virginia, but at the beginning of 1956 (after only six months in America) he felt the desperate need to return to South Africa. There he established Africa South, which very quickly became a leading international front against racialism. From the first issue Africa South was attacked by the Nationalist Government and Press, and Mr Segal was subjected to a series of restrictions on his activities and a campaign of violence.On March 30th, 1960, nine days after the Sharpville shootings, mass arrests took place and a State of Emergency was declared. Warned that the poice were searching for him in Cape Town, Segal drove across the border into Bechuanaland and from there travelled with the aid of documents from the Indian Government.This is a political autobiography in that Ronald Segal's life had been governed entirely by his opposition to the white terrorism of South Africa.
