A History of Piute County

Linda King Newell
4.9/5 (17540 ratings)
Description:Small in area and population, but rich in history, Piute County is located in central Utah. It is a land of high mountains and mountain valleys. Human occupation of the area began at least 10,000 years ago and has continued to the present day. The county was named after an early spelling of the Paiute Indians, who, along with bands of Utes and other Native Americans, occupied the region at the time of the beginning of white settlement. Early Mormon settlers soon found the land to be best suited to livestock raising, although some farming was done, particularly of forage crops and potatoes. The county was the scene of troubles during the Black Hawk War of the 1860s; but, after settlement resumed, discoveries of gold and silver, particularly around Marysvale, led to a rapid increase in population, including a large percentage of non-Mormons. Prosperity generally continued into the twentieth century, but the gradual decline of mining meant a general return to the county's agricultural economic base and consequent loss of population. In the late twentieth century Piute County residents enjoy a quiet rural lifestyle. The county's beauty, with its rivers, lakes, and mountains, attracts nature lovers and, outdoor recreationists. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
