Description:Born in 1851 in the Hautes-Pyrenees, Foch fought in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 and became an artillery specialist. In 1907, he was appointed as head of the École de Guerre. In 1914 Foch commanded the French Second Army, stopping the German advance on Nancy. Following the Battle of the Marne he served in Flanders and became commandant of the French Army Group at the Somme.
