Time had scrawled the most melancholy epitaphs over the bafﬂed ambition and blighted hopes of an aspiring race; and the many names to which its attention had been directed, as the successive harbingers of that prophetic period of unprecedented glory, which was continually expected to dawn upon the earth, were slumbering in the perfect oblivion of their power.
