Description:This volume presents research grounded in the basic neurobiology and genetics of human social functioning in the context of human-animal interactions (HAI). It has two main aims: (1) to provide information to clinicians, teachers and the public about the science underlying HAI--how and why HAI has the effects that it does, and the value it can have for children, when properly understood and guided; and (2) to provide a basis for researchers to consider conducting studies of basic mechanisms, where sufficient evidence exists to suggest potential benefits of animal-assisted interventions with children with disabilities, acute or chronic health conditions, or social or emotional difficulties.Humans have a wonderful capacity to develop social systems and engage in positive interactions both with other humans and with members of different species. The most obvious example of this is the interspecies relationship between humans and companion animals such as dogs and cats. A number of studies have suggested that HAI may play a role in improving human health, preventing emotional distress, reducing stress, increasing attention in the academic setting, and increasing well-being across the life-span. However, most past research has been descriptive and, until now, little work has looked at the underlying neurobiological mechanisms associated with HAI. Because this is an emerging area of public health inquiry, researchers with expertise in studying neurobiological mechanisms supporting human behaviors have rarely been involved in HAI and are not familiar with the intriguing public health results and questions early HAI research has generated. Likewise, most researchers who have been involved in current HAI studies are not familiar with neurobiological approaches or are not familiar with the types of collaborations they could establish to investigate basic mechanisms associated with HAI. The principal aim of this volume is to bring together in one place these disparate research perspectives. The researchers contributing to this volume are all experts in the neural bases of attachment, social bonds, emotions in social interactions, cognition and social bases of cognition, responses to social stressors, and genetics. Some of these researchers are investigating HAI and others primarily study humans but are interested in HAI.Included in the volume are concepts and methodologies that social neuroscientists use to understand human social relationships, social functioning, and social bases of cognitive development. The volume also shows how social neuroscience concepts and methodologies can be applied to understanding the role of animals in human life. It will provide future directions for needed research on the underlying mechanisms that can move the field toward a deeper understanding of the nature of HAI and clinical trials of the usefulness of HAI.This book will be primarily of interest to researchers and clinicians who wish to know how and why HAI produces the effects that have been observed, and to those who have an interest in the field of social neuroscience more generally. It will also be of interest to those who simply wish to better understand the role of animals in the lives of human beings. The audience for this book would be those practitioners and researchers already involved in either using or studying human-animal interaction as well as neuroscientists and scientists studying both human and animal behavior who have not yet studied the two in interaction. It should also appeal to researchers in child health and development, geriatric researchers, and clinicians using or considering using animals as an adjunct in their practices. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
