The German Lied

Ruth Michaelis-Jena
4.9/5 (33103 ratings)
Description:The German Lied in its best examples is an ideal unity of poetry and music. As gratifying as it is to make a good translation into another language, it is still rarer to find translations which reproduce the beauty of the poem as well as respect the musical diction. An ideal singable verbatim translation is impossible due to difference of syntax. The singer who does not know the language but attempts to sing in the original remains unable to express the true meaning of a musical phrase. Thus the reasons for this edition firstly to produce a free, yet exact translation of the poem apart from the music; secondly, to provide a verbatim translation, written below the corresponding German word in the music not to be sung - but to aid the singer in interpreting and creating the intended mood and meaning of the song. The composers studied are : Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Franz, Brahms, and Wolf. Abendempfindung by W.A. Mozart; Aus meinen grossen Schmerzen by R. Franz; Die Bekehrte by H. Wolf; Bitte by R. Franz; Du bist wie eine Blume by R. Schumann; Gruss by F. Mendelssohn; Heimweh by H. Wolf; Ich liebe dich by L. van Beethoven; Klarchens Lied by F. Schubert; Lied der Mignon by F. Schubert; Die Mainacht by R. Franz; Mondnacht by R. Schumann; Die Mutter Erde by F. Schubert; Nachtlied by F. Mendelssohn; Neue Liebe, neues Leben by L. van Beethoven; Der Schmied by J. Brahms; Die Schmetterling by F. Schubert; Talismane by R. Schumann; Verschwiegene Liebe by H. Wolf; Volksliedchen by R. Sc̃humann; Wenn sich zwei Herzen scheiden by F.
