Between the River Cauca and the San Jose Pass the question of gradient is arbitrarily determined by two altitudes. The one, the plain of the Cauca valley, and the other, the head of the cascade in the San Marcos stream, one-and-a-half mile distant from the San Jose Pass. A rise of 1,500 feet has to be effected in a distance of six miles. The choice for the line lies between the north and south sides of the San Marcos valley. The north side of the valley is much more irregular than the south, as is natural, when it is seen that the mass of the Cordillera on that side is more extensive and gives a larger watershed. Not only would there be a long series of heavy viaducts and bridges, but owing to the sharpness of the spurs and narrowness of the ravines, the cuttings would be far heavier. On calculating the gradient I found that the line would pass the large valley which joins the San Marcos, a mile above the Hacienda of the same name, at a height which would throw it into extremely unfavorable ground.
