Description:David P. Ausubel, born in 1918, grew up in Brooklyn. He attended the U. of Pennsylvania, doing pre-med & majoring in Psychology. After graduating from the medical school at Middlesex U., he completed a rotating internship at Gouveneur Hospital in Manhattan's lower east side, including the Little Italy & Chinatown of 1944. Military service began then with the US Public Health Service. He was assigned to UN Relief & Rehabilitation Administration in Stuttgart, working with displaced persons. Psychiatric residences followed with the US Public Health Service in Kentucky, the Buffalo Psychiatric Center & Bronx Psychiatric Center. With help from the GI Bill, he earned a PhD in Developmental Psychology from Columbia. A series of psychological professorships ensued at schools of education: the U. of Illinois, U. of Toronto & European universities at Berne, Rome's Salesian University & the Officer's Training College at Munich. He received a Fulbright Research Grant in '57-58 to do comparative study of the vocational motivation of Maoris & Europeans. In '73 he retired from academe to devote time to psychiatric practice. His interests have been general psychopathology, ego development, drug addiction & forensic psychiatry. He published textbooks in developmental & educational psychology & books on specialized topics such as drug addiction, psychopathology & ego development as well as over 150 journal articles. In '76 he received the APA's Thorndike Award for Distinguished Psychological Contributions to Education. He retired from professional life in '94 to devote time to writing.
