Adolph Sutro: A Biography

Robert E. Stewart Jr.
4.9/5 (24868 ratings)
Description:With little formal education but with a brilliant mind and dynamic energy, Sutro played a big role in the colorful days of Western history. He arrived in San Francisco in 1850, and fell immediately under the spell of the city. But many years would pass before he could live theree; for he went soon after to see the Comstock Lode in Virginia City and his idea of a tunnel to drain the mines would occupy him for a long time. The 4-mile Sutro Tunnel was not only an engineering feat, but the odds against which he labored seemed insurmountable. He fought the organized opposition of the mineowners and he fought the Bank Ring. Sutro invested in sand lots in San Francisco and became very wealthy. He used this wealth in large part to enhance the city he loved. He built the Sutro Baths, provided parks and statuary and a magnificent collection of books for the people of San Francisco. He became its Mayor, but alas, only after his energy was spent. Although his life influenced the development of the Western world, few things today remain named SUTRO. A caprice of Fate so ordained it.We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
