When Leigh goes to see an apartment near St. Mark's church, she arrives to find the disheveled, handsome writer Asa Assner, who appears to be a little drunk and having a very bad day indeed. She's beguiled by his mysterious, Byronic manner, and the two spend a chaste but life-altering night together. By the time she wakes up, he's already left for Paris. The two begin writing letters to each other in which Asa slowly reveals the reasons for his hasty departure, and Leigh in turn allows herself to explore some of her own doubts and demons, chief amongst them the pain and indescribable loss she feels from having never known her parents, who died when she was very young. The more those around her reveal themselves, the more mysterious they become, and Leigh is quickly learning that in a city as vast and complicated as New York, people can be connected in the most unexpected ways.
