Il padre e David Nemerov e la madre Gertrude Russek. E la seconda di tre figli, il fratello maggiore, Howard Nemerov, piu grande di Diane di tre anni, diventera uno dei maggiori poeti americani. La sorella minore, Renee una scultrice. Anche il padre David, dopo essersi ritirato dagli affari fara il pittore, con un discreto successo commerciale. Dal 1930 Diane frequenta la "Ethical culture school" a New York, e negli anni successivi la Fieldston School.
